WINS THE
2006 COLLEGE BOWL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
TOURNAMENT
LOS ANGELES, CA -- The team from the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) won the 2006 College Bowl National Championship Tournament
(NCT). Now in its 53rd year, College Bowl competition is held on
some 300 college and university campuses in the U.S. and Canada.
The annual College Bowl competition has three phases: Campus Tournaments
are held in the fall and each school selects its varsity team.
In February, teams compete at the Regional Championship Tournaments.
The 15 Regional Champions plus a 16th wild card team advance to
the spring National Championship Tournament.
In each game, two teams of four players each compete to answer
questions in academic subject areas including history, science,
literature, geography, religion, social sciences, the arts as well
as sports, current events, general knowledge, popular culture and
multicultural topics.
The 2006 NCT featured the top 16 teams from across the country:
University of Massachusetts-Lowell (Region 1), St. Bonaventure University (Region 2), Seton Hall University (Region 3), Bucknell University
(Region 4), Davidson College (Region 5), Valdosta State University (Region 6), The Ohio State University (Region 7), Northwestern University
(Region 8), University of Illinois-Urbana (Region 9), University
of Minnesota (Region 10), Washington University-St. Louis (Region 11),
Baylor University (Region 12), University of Arizona (Region
13), Montana State University-Billings (Region 14), University of California-Los Angeles (Region 15) and University of New Mexico (wild card team).
UCLA's winning team was captained by Charles Meigs, a Senior History major from Bellevue, WA. Other members of the team were; Clifford Galiher, a Freshman Political Science major from Half Moon Bay, CA, Jay Turetzky, a Graduate Student in Biology from Southfield, MI and Dwight Wynne, a Junior Cybernetics major from Mission Viejo, CA..
This is the first NCT win for UCLA whose teams have competed for many years. In additionm they appearanced in the
1960's on the G.E. College Bowl TV program.
The NCT was held April 21-23, 2006 at the University of Hartford.
The U of H has earned an international reputation for its
undergraduate and graduate programs. Its increasing reputation for innovative programming and a caring faculty currently attracts more than 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in 86 undergraduate majors and 32 graduate programs. Their choices run the gamut from architectural engineering to musical theatre to communication and beyond. Today’s University of Hartford has surpassed the founders’ original but modest plans for a local university in Hartford, becoming instead a vibrant and growing institution that draws students from 46 states and 54 countries. We have become a university for the world.
College Bowl competition is run in conjunction with the Association
of College Unions International (ACUI). ACUI serves student union
and student activities professionals at its nearly 1,000 member
institutions worldwide. ACUI provides leadership for the College
Bowl program and its volunteers assists with all phases of College
Bowl play - on campus, at the Regionals and at the Nationals. |
