The UCLA College Bowl Club is pleased to announce: ***The 2006 NAQT Southern California Championship*** DATE: Sunday, March 12th, 2006. We hope this does not preclude any teams from registering, though we apologize in advance if it does. For those of you who have asked why not March 11, we are hosting an independent college tournament that day. LOCATION: The Event will likely be held at Bunche Hall on the beautiful campus of UCLA. There is a small chance the tournament will be held in Ackerman Union and Kerckhoff Hall. SCHEDULE: 8:45 AM Registration 9:10 AM Rules Meeting 9:30 AM First Round Teams not showing up by 9:20 a.m. will risk forfeiture of their spot, and any team on the waiting list will be granted entry. Traffic on the 405 freeway can be heavy in the morning, so please allow some extra time for commute. FOOD: Food and beverages will be provided for breakfast. It is recommended that each team member bring at least $7 for lunch on campus (Ackerman Union, Northern Lights, Lu Valle Commons, etc.). Eateries on campus include Panda Express, Sbarro's, Rubio's, and others. A map of UCLA is available at http://www.ucla.edu/map. Please print out copies of this map to bring with you to the tournament. FORMAT: We will be using NAQT set IS-59, used across the country for state championships. The format will be official NAQT, with untimed rounds, consisting of 20 toss-ups per round. If you have any specific questions, please e-mail dpwynne@ucla.edu before the tournament so we can make sure we give all teams the correct information. MAILING LIST: The UCLA College Bowl Club has set up a Listserv to facilitate the announcement of tournaments and related information for tournaments involving high schools in Southern California. To sign up for this list, send an e-mail to qb-hs-socal-request@lists.ucla.edu from the e-mail address you would like to add. Please make sure the word "subscribe" is in the subject of the message. We ask that at least one person affiliated with each school sign-up for the list, but we encourage as many people as possible to do so, to make sure every team gets all the latest news on tournaments. I personally believe this mailing list to be an improvement over the current one compiled by Willie Chen almost five years ago and several of whose e-mail addresses will send back a “Mail Not Deliverable” message to this e-mail. PRICING STRUCTURE: Base fee = $110 -$5 for a fully-functional buzzer system (Must have at least four working buzzers on both sides) -$10 for a pre-approved moderator -$10 for the second team from a school -$20 for the third (or additional) team from a school Late Withdrawal Penalty: Any team withdrawing after March 5th may be subject to a $10 late withdrawal penalty on a future event held by the UCLA College Bowl Club. Please make checks payable to “College Bowl Club of UCLA.” Please do not make a check out to any other person or entity, including “UCLA Quiz Bowl,” as we cannot cash those checks. An address will be provided shortly for those of you who wish to mail your checks in advance. REGISTRATION: The Tournament Director for the 2006 NAQT Southern California High School Championship is Dwight Wynne. The tournament cap will be initially set at 20 teams. We will raise this limit if space becomes available. We encourage schools to send multiple teams, but please be advised that if a school enrolls one team after another school has enrolled two teams, the former school's "A" team will get a spot before the latter school's "B" team. The current list of schools is: Beckman (2 teams, no buzzers or moderators) Edison (2 teams, ? buzzers, ? moderators) Hart (1 team, 1 buzzer, no moderators) Rancho Bernardo (2 teams, ? buzzers, ? moderators) San Dieguito (2 teams, 2 buzzers, no moderators) Santa Monica (3 teams, no buzzers or moderators) Tustin (1 team, no buzzers or moderators) Valley (1 team, no buzzers or moderators) We anticipate being able to accommodate up to 24 teams, but until we can confirm this, the cap is set at 20 teams. If information for your school is incorrect or missing, please let me know the relevant additions/corrections as soon as possible. If your school is not on the above list of teams but is planning to come, please e-mail dpwynne@ucla.edu with: 1) Your school's name 2) Coach (or representative) name and e-mail address 3) The number of teams you are bringing 4) The number of buzzer systems and/or moderators you would like to bring Updates about the tournament will primarily be through the Southern California High School Quiz Bowl Mailing List; however, they should also be posted online. Our club website is http://quizbowl.bol.ucla.edu. A link should become available once this announcement has been posted. If you have any questions about any of this, please e-mail dpwynne@ucla.edu. Thanks and good luck to all teams. Dwight Wynne Tournament Director, 2006 NAQT Southern California Championship
