The College Bowl Club of UCLA announces Aztlan Cup II: Reggie the Registration Rig Rides Again, to take place March 11, 2006. The chief editor will be Dwight Wynne, with assistance from Ray Luo and Charles Meigs. The tournament director will be Dwight Wynne. Eligibility: Anyone who is interested in playing. High school teams are allowed to play but severely discouraged from doing so. Fees: Base Fee per team = $100 Buzzer -$5 Pre-approved moderator -$10 Second team discount -$10 Third team discount -$20 Nth team discount -$10(N-1) Packet Requirements: 24 tossups and 24 bonuses total, to consist of: 4/4 Science One each on biology, chemistry, and physics. The fourth should be from one of those three or math, astronomy, earth science, or computer science. Science biography questions are unacceptable; a maximum of one serious history of science question is acceptable. 4/4 History One each on European, American, and World. The fourth can be from any of the three subcategories. No more than three of your eight total questions should be about a single century. 4/4 Literature One each on prose, poetry, and drama. The fourth can be from any of the three subcategories. At least two of the eight total questions should be on non-English language literature. 3/3 Religion/Mythology/Philosophy One each from religion, mythology, and philosophy. One religion question should be Judeo-Christian, the other can be Judeo-Christian but a different religion is preferred. One mythology question should be Greco-Roman; the other should be from some other mythology. 3/3 Fine Arts One each on painting and classical music. The third should be taken from opera, jazz, sculpture, photography, architecture, ballet, or serious film. 3/3 Geography and Social Science At least 1/1 from both Geography and Social Science. Social Science should be taken from economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, archaeology, and law. 2/2 Current Events/Pop Culture/Sports One question each on current events, pop culture, and sports. The fourth question can be on any of the categories. 1/1 Miscellaneous The two questions should not be from the same category. Multidisciplinary questions are encouraged. Half packets should consist of 12/12: 2/2 Science, 2/2 History, 2/2 Literature, 2/1 or 1/2 RMP, 1/2 or 2/1 Fine Arts, 1/1 Geography or Social Science, 1/1 Current Events/Pop Culture/Sports and 1/1 Miscellaneous. Of course, if you are writing the second half of your packet, you should replace “1/1 Miscellaneous” with 1/1 additional Geography or Social Science. Packet Discounts (per half-packet): -$25 if received by 11:59 PM on December 9, 2005 -$15 if received by 11:59 PM on January 20, 2006 -$5 if received by 11:59 PM on February 3, 2006 -$0 if received by 11:59 PM on February 10, 2006 +$5 if received by 11:59 PM on February 17, 2006 +$15 if received by 11:59 PM on February 24, 2006 So a full packet submitted before January 20 would earn a discount of $30 for two half-packets submitted before January 20. Similarly, a team can submit the first half of their packet before December 9 for the $25 discount and then the rest before January 20 for a $40 total discount. Who has to write questions: Every team that plans on attending. Teams composed entirely of players in their first two years of competition need only write a half packet for it to count as a full packet. All other teams must write a full packet; however, contact the chief editor at dpwynne at ucla dot edu if you feel that for whatever reason your team should only have to write a half packet, if your request is approved, you will only get the half-packet discount if your packet is received before the no-penalty deadline, but will pay the full-packet penalty if that packet is received after the no-penalty deadline. Difficulty: All tossups should be things most teams other than yours have heard of, and all bonuses should be written such that anyone who knows anything about the subject should get 5-10 points but only those with deep knowledge should get 30 points. Random Additional Directions: Packets should be sorted by category and sent to Dwight at dpwynne at ucla dot edu. I don’t have a specific formatting preference, but please send them in a format Microsoft Word can open (.html, .doc, .rtf, .txt). Tossups should end somewhere between the fifth and eighth lines in size 10 standard font (Arial, Courier New, or Times New Roman). Bonus parts should end on or before the third line and should be preceded by the point value(s) of the part in parentheses. Commonly used abbreviations are allowed. All answers should be preceded by "Answer:" with the required parts bolded and underlined; anything to prompt on should be listed as (prompt on "this answer"). Example Tossup and Bonus: Unlike a tournament announced by the same club in late 2004, this tournament won’t be canceled just because no one had submitted packets more than two months before the event. It won’t have a repeat on “beehives” or an obscure USC A packet that was never read. Unlike an event that packet swapped with the original of this name, it won’t have questions consistently at “ACF Nationals level” difficulty. It will, however, take place on March 11, 2006. FTP, identify this long-awaited sequel to a March 2004 tournament, the second of its name at UCLA.
